He was born in 1971 in East Harlem, New York City, and rose to fame in the early 1990s with his debut album 2Pacalypse Now.

 

Shakur began his career as a roadie and backup dancer for the alternative hip hop group Digital Underground in the early 1990s. He released his debut solo album, 2Pacalypse Now, in 1991. The album was a critical and commercial success, and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His follow-up album, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., was released in 1993 and was certified platinum.
